What is Schutzhund?

What are SchH and VPG titles?

The BH, or companion dog title, is a pre-requirement for Schutzhund titles. the minimum age requirements of 15 months. The young dog is judged on social skills around traffic, dogs, and people as well as heeling, sit, down, and gunfire test. The handler also has to take a short written test explaining the concepts of training a working dog.

There are three levels of the Schutzhund test:

Schutzhund (VPG) 1
Schutzhund (VPG) 2
Schutzhund (VPG) 3

Each progressing SchH test requires more intensity and advanced skill. The tests include: tracking, obedience, and protection phases. The National and World level competitions occur at the SchH3/VPG3 level.

The FH1 and FH2, are advanced tracking degrees requiring the dog track an aged track up to a mile long and indicate placed articles.

AD is an 12.5 mile endurance test and includes obedience.

'"Schutzhund (German for "protection dog") tests dogs of all breeds for the traits necessary for police-type work. Dogs that pass Schutzhund tests should be suitable for a wide variety of tasks: police work, specific odor detection, search and rescue, and many others. The purpose of Schutzhund is to identify dogs that have or do not have the character traits required for these demanding jobs. Some of those traits are:

* Strong desire to work
* Courage
* Intelligence
* Trainability
* Strong bond to the handler
* Perseverance
* Protective Instinct

Schutzhund training tests these traits. It also tests physical traits such as strength, endurance, agility, and scenting ability. The goal of Schutzhund is to illuminate the character of a dog through training. Breeders can use this insight to determine how and whether to use the dog in producing the next generation of working dogs"'. ..Wikipedia
